Book Review: The Wizard of Oz is a fun and exciting book full of colorful characters. My boys loved it! Especially the flying monkeys and the Wicked Witch! Most people know this story because of the beloved classic movie. There are, however some more scary and graphic parts in the novel that are not featured in the movie. For example, the book goes into great detail over how the Tin Woodsman had become made of tin. The Wicked Witch had his limbs chopped off one by one, and each time the Woodsman would get his limbs replaced by tin until finally, the Witch had his head cut off! The Witch also sends wolves, crows and bees to stop the four heroes, and this too can be scary to little ones or sensitive kiddos. So be aware of these parts so you can gloss over them if you need to. Otherwise this book is full of adventure and fun and you'll love it as much as the kids do!

Yellow Brick Road
To make a yellow brick road, I laid out a long piece of butcher paper on our driveway. I gave the kids a bottle of yellow (washable!) paint and let them go at it! Then, I cut the paper up into brick-like pieces and taped them to the floor. The kids had fun walking along the "road".
To make the hats, I cut each poster board in half. Then I drew a "hat" for each of the main characters. The Tin Woodsman gets an oil funnel, the Scarecrow gets a green hat, the Cowardly Lion, a mane and ears, and Dorothy gets hair with long pigtails. I happened to have a witch hat. I cut them out, had the kids color each one, then taped them onto wooden skewers. I know the freehand drawing will intimidate some of you. It doesn't have to be perfect! You're kids will LOVE it no matter what it looks like! This ended up being one of my favorite things because while watching the movie, my son would run and grab the corresponding "hat" when a new character was introduced.
For the treats I made some simple sugar cookies. I rolled and cut the sugar cookies into the shapes of shoes and castles. I then frosted the cookies and then had the kids dip the shoe cookies in red sugar sprinkles, and the castle in green sugar to represent the Emerald City. I also made some cupcakes. Admittedly they took a little bit more time, but were so fun! I just used a boxed cake mix and made them into cupcakes and frosted them. Then I got some gum paste (you can find it at any craft store, or even Walmart). I cut off small pieces of gum paste and shaped them into tiny legs and little pointy shoes. I happened to have some food markers on hand, but you can also purchase them at a craft store. I striped the legs black and colored the little feet red. It took a while to do this. If you don't want to go to all that trouble, you could also draw a little leg and shoe, color it and make copies. Then cut out the legs from the paper and glue onto heavy card stock. You can then place the overturned cupcake on the paper legs instead of the gum paste legs. Either way you do it, they are super cute and really fun for the kids.
I thought it would be fun to have handouts for this party. I wanted to give the kids their own heart, brain and courage gifts. So I went to the party supply store and looked at their little toys and found some things that worked. You could use my ideas, or find some of your own. For the Tin Woodsman's heart I found a little foil wrapped chocolate heart. For the Lion's Courage, I found a little policeman badge. The Scarecrow's brain was a little more tricky, but I found a little trivia book that I thought would work. I also found a little silver wand to represent Glenda's wand. I tied it with a sparkly red ribbon and a little tag that I printed out.
